SLOWER-THAN-LIGHT SHRINE: IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD is a public monument and portal paying homage to liberation seekers who traversed the Underground Railroad in St. Louis, using the caves beneath the city on their path. The shrine honors the abolitionist movement and marronage of the Underground Railroad, and the resonance of the issues urgent in the present and relative future(s). The shrine is constructed in the image of a Kongo cosmogram as well as configurations related to quantum physics experiments with gates and archways drawn from demolished homes in St. Louis.
Community Futures: Space-Time Liberation Lab (CF:STL Lab) is a three-month-long Afrofuturist housing and land justice lab at The Luminary. CF:STL Lab will provide a temporary convening space-time for housing advocates, artists, organizers, tenants, and other people impacted by housing insecurity and land injustice and/or interested in co-creating strategies to address its impacts. With these projects, BQF invites community members to participate through the marking, mapping, and storage of space and time that can later be reclaimed.

In this workshop with Solidarity Economy STL at CF:STL Lab, we will invite participants to imagine what it would be like to live in a solidarity economy where all of the things a community needs–like housing, schools, farms and food production, local governance structures, art and culture, healthcare and healing, and transportation–are controlled and governed by everyday people. Through interactive discussions and visioning exercises, we will examine the potential for building these models and envision how solidarity economy principles can be applied to housing and other systems in our communities.

About THE ARTIST
Black Quantum Futurism is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Camae Ayewa and Rasheedah Phillips exploring the intersections of futurism, creative media, DIY-aesthetics, and activism in marginalized communities through an alternative temporal lens. For Counterpublic 2023, Black Quantum Futurism’s overall framework Space-Time Liberation (STL) explores tools and mechanisms for how residents and community members of St. Louis can reclaim land, space, time, and memory in their neighborhoods, and the pathways for repair and justice that are both forward-reaching and backward-reaching simultaneously.
